layered over unfamiliar songs

a never-ending game

balls on the table roll

one after another

into dark pockets

in the dark our voices slice open the quiet

silent people finish beers

sound condenses under the lights

no guiding melody

Ana Mendieta

the Cuban artist

who lived in Iowa for twelve years

she died in 1985

fell from the top of a New York apartment building

her husband said

she killed herself

some disbelieve

but we have no means of dispute

because other than him

no one was there

we cannot imagine the fictional standpoint

see only her body and blood

burning inside the book

becoming earth, dead trees, and ash

we stroll down a road

straight, quiet, and endless

maybe she

once walked here

we have already drunk the night-black tea

leaving only the sounds of conversation, cars, and the breeze

beneath the lights

silent people in the windows
